Egg Drop Challenge Iteration #1

2) total # of achievments: 23

3)

4)

Our total weight was 24 grams without the egg and could also fit inside of a cigar box so we earned 3 more points there.

We earned 3 achievment for hitting the second ring of the target.

Our egg cracked but remained in good form, only minor damage, no massive breaking, so we earned 3 points.

We used geometry and algebra/physics to calculate projections for our project as shown in the pistures, earning us 2 more points, we also earned 2 points for sketches, and 2 points for material planning.

5) Designs with parachutes were very very effective and mostly got the egg securely, but i did like our design and thought it yielded good results except for the egg breaking beacause i threw our apparatus at the target instead of dropping it (i was going for speed). I think we could have made our orject smalled and more padded. We could have also worked on our launching to make the design more accurate.

Glider Challenge

1. Final Design

2. Design Phase

1) The challenge is to create a glider using balsa wood and tissue paper. We have to make a glider that will hopefully glide the longest for the greatest amount of distance and most hangtime, if not both then it should do one of those things.

2) There are no rules to brainstorming. We went through all possible ideas and considered what would be the best approach to create the best design. We took ideas from the gliders around the class and we went online to look up ways in which the most efficient gliders are built, we then took these ideas to help create our own. Our idea was to create a glider with a short glider with long wings, angled up at 15 degrees and curved at the tips to reduce turbulance, then put two horizontal fins as well as one vertical fin. We ended not being able to to curve the wings because the wood would bend enough, also we ended up not being able to angle thie wings also, so we had to just put them flat, and we couldn't put a vertical wing because of lack of material.

3) Criteria: We had to use the material, the blasa wood and tissue paper, nothing else, and had to use glue and tape to stick things together, nothing else.

Constraints: The criteria really limited our creativity because we couldn't just use any material we wanted which limited what we could do.

3. Test Phase

4. Performance/ Improvements

Our glider did not perform very well at all, it dropped immediately and went backwards. I i think a lot of it had to do with the wings, the wings needed to be much shorter because they were to heavy and caught too much wind, the shape of the wings need to be changed because they weren't efficient, and lastly the wings were not supported right they were to flmsy. Also we needed to put on a vertical fin, that would have helped a lot.

Machine Control: Capstone Project

Brainstorming Ideas: Our group went through a few design ideas until we came upon the one we ended up using for our final design. We started with a kind of rail design in which the marbles traveled down a series of rails with the sensors positioned on the sides, and the marbles would trigger a sensor and fall off the rail to the corresponding spot. Then we had a sliding sensor mechanism, where the marbles would travel onto a sliding sensor that would put them into the corresponding tracks, this idea was what helped spawn our final design. After this design we replaced the large slider with a system that would seperate the marbles based off the size and we still used the smaller slider to seperate the glass marbles, this was our last brainstorming idea before we came up with our final design.

Decision Matrix:

Final Design: In our design the marbles go down the nitial track where a double gate system allows only one marble to go through at a time. The marbles then pass an opening where The smalle marbles (wood and metal) will go through and large marbles (glass) will go past. The small marbles pass through a magnet where wood marbles just pass through to their bin but the metal ones are caught by the magnet and are then pushed off into their bin. The glass marbles go down the track to a light sensor area which triggers a rotating path that guides them to their corresponding bins.

Design Modifications: We had to take out the initial gate system that only allowed one marble to go through at a time because it all of sudden stopped working and we couldn't figure out why so we had to take it out because we did not have the time to figure out the prblem and fix it.

Reflection: We were never actually able to finish our project, mostly due to time. There was definitely enough time given but our team started kind of late, not only that we had to change our design multiple design and more or less start over. Our final design however was definitely the right design and we would have been able to make it work had we had more time, in my opinion, but again that was due to a late start. When we had finished all we had left to do was the programming, the design and assembly was all done. Given another chance the biggest thing i would do differently is get started sooner so I have as much time as possible and i would also go over every possible design i can think of before going into the building process. We were not able to able to fulfill the problem statement,we had the right design and it would had worked had we got the machine up and running and programmed. I definitely learned that time management is key and that brainstorming and coming up with the best idea is very important.

A Helping Hand: W did not recieve much help from any other students. We recieved most of our help from you Mr. Olsen, so thank you. We did recieve some help from Freddy who gave us some ideas and pointers and helped with some mechanics when I asked but that was pretty much it. We mostly figured it out on our own.

Achievments: I really like the achievement idea, it was be a very good way to grade. That way there is more freedom as to what you focus your attention on for a grade, which always makes it easier. Some ideas would be an achievment would be for an achievement for getting each marble sorted and partial credit for geting some of them sorted.

From the initial program you create a subprogram by putting it through the variable branch function which allows you to put the new subprogram into the main program.

Project 3.1.7 Machine Design

In this activity we were given insructions to design an efficient way to record times of a track race. The design was suppose to start the time when the first sensor was tripped and was supposed to stop the clock and buzz when the second sensor was tripped.

In my group was Kody, Nick, and I. We all put in our effort and did our part to build the most efficient contraption. Nick definately did the most work. We all help design and build the contraption. We all had a hand in the programming process and we all had equal effort building it. But Nick was definately the mvp, he had the biggest impact on the making of the desgin.

Conclusion:
1. The hardest part of creating it wasd definately the programming. It took awhile before we had the programming completely right and the machine worked the way we wanted and needed it to. The other parts were challenging to get right but this step was definately the hardest and most frustrating.
2. We had a lot of problems with flowcharting, so something to help with that would been very helpful. I cant think of anything else other than that,

Activity 3.1.2 Flowchart

Conclusion Questions

1, Flowchrting is similar to using a map r plan of route during a trip in that it outlines the basic step of the process of getting from point a to point b. It illustrates the steps you need to get in an easy to read fashion.

2. Every day I wake up and go to school. I spend about 6 hours in school each day. After school i go to trck practice. When I'm done with that i come home do homework, eat dinner, hang out and then go to bed.
